Articles
Michael Goetinck's articles appear in Green Energy Times.

  • Bulk Water Management in Basements and Crawlspaces>
Common basement problems and what to do about them.
Many problems can be avoided through proper attention at the time of original design or construction.

  • Moisture Management in Closed Cavities>
A building’s ability to dry out needs to be greater than or equal to its potential for getting wet.
About 20 years ago, an old time Yankee master carpenter told me, “Michael, it doesn’t matter if water gets in as long as it can get out.” ...His experience was largely in buildings with high drying potential...as opposed to the homes that many of us want to create or retro-fit for high performance with currently available materials. I’ll update his statement by saying that a building’s ability to dry out needs to be greater than, or at least equal to, its potential for getting wet.

  • Deep Energy Retrofit>
    Double wall construction
If you want to know exactly how a double wall assembly is going to perform, there are a few things to consider: the depth of the cavity, the inside-to-outside distance between the studs, and how many window and door openings there are..
